Walking steps to distance calculator

Turn a step count into an estimated distance using your own step length, or calculate it from a measured walk. Add your body weight, walking time, and a matching Compendium pace only if you want the optional calorie estimate. Step length varies, and the calorie result is a rough gross-energy estimate, not a personal measurement.

The math, plainly

How it works

  1. 01

Enter the distance covered by one foot placement, or measure a known path and divide its distance by the steps you counted. Do not enter a two-step stride as a step length.

  2. 02

Distance equals step count × step length. The calculator converts your input to miles and kilometers using exact length-unit factors.

  3. 03

Calories are optional: enter body weight, actual walking minutes, and the closest listed level-walking intensity. The 2024 Adult Compendium defines 1 MET as about 1 kcal per kg per hour; this estimate uses MET × kilograms × hours and includes resting energy.
